Yang Liu, Wu Shih Yi and Omar Shiha won the most anticipated quarter-finals in Brazil

China’s Yang Liu, Chinese Taipei’s Wu Shih Yi and Norway’s Omar Shiha won the hardest quarter-final contests at the World Boxing Cup in Foz da Iguacu, Brazil on Day5. Chinese Taipei’s Wu Shih Yi, the Paris Olympics bronze medallist, moved down to the 57kg in the recent weeks once again and she impressed against United States’ Alyssa Mendoza therefore she joined the semi-finals in this World Cup. Brazil’s defending World Champion at the women’s 60kg, Rebeca Santos won two out of the three rounds against Venezuela’s veteran Krisandy Rios and she marched to the semi-finals but Kazakhstan’s Asian Champion Viktoriya Grafeyeva, China’s Tian Yu and Poland’s Aneta Rygielska also joined the final stages. Kazakhstan’s reigning World Champion at the female 65kg, Aida Abikeyeva controlled all of the three rounds over Morocco’s Douaa Zaki but England’s European U23 Champion Sacha Hickey, Uzbekistan’s Asian Champion Navbakhor Khamidova and Belgium’s European Games runner-up Oshin Derieuw are also in the semi-finals. Poland’s Barbara Marcinkowska had excellent junior and youth results in the past and she returned to the elite competitions in top shape last year. The Polish boxer needed a great finish to beat Germany’s Leonie Mueller which was one of the top contests at the women’s 70kg weight class. Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti is a rising star at the 70kg and she used her longer reach better than Mexico’s Citlalli Ortiz while a new US talent, Isabella Winkler also eliminated a top opponent, England’s Chantelle Reid. One of the most anticipated contests of the fifth competition day was held between Turkey’s Olympic Champion Busenaz Surmeneli and China’s World Champion Yang Liu which has finished with the tight success of the latter at the 70kg. Spain’s Olympian and World silver medallist Rafael Lozano Serrano made his professional debut on March but he returned to the national in time to show his outstanding skills in Foz da Iguacu where he eliminated Germany’s Ali El Sari at the 55kg. His teammate, the former European Champion Martin Molina also joined the semi-finals of the event at the 50kg. The men’s 60kg weight category is a super strong division in Foz da Iguacu where Brazil’s No.1, Luiz Gabriel Oliveira, Canada’s brilliant Keoma Al Ahmadieh, France’s Lounes Hamraoui and United States’ Salim Ellis Bay all advanced to the last four. Uzbekistan’s multiple Asian Champion Jakhongir Zokirov controlled his quarter-finals over Bulgaria’s Yordan Hernandez but Norway’s Omar Shiha delivered the sensation of the super heavyweight with his success over United States’ Kelvin Watts.
