Wales had a strong and successful session at the Commonwealth Games

Wales had a strong and successful session in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland today.

Canada’s Amber-Jane Wall replaced McKenzie Wright in the national team at the women’s 51kg weight category and following her second consecutive success, she is a medallist in Glasgow where she turned back a hectic fight against Wales’ Niamh Brookes.

India’s Sakshi Choudhary fought out her place in the national team this year when she defeated the World Champion Nikhat Zareen. The 26-year-old Indian controlled all of the three rounds against Northern Ireland’s Caitlin Fryers and she joined the last four at the women’s 51kg.

Sri Lanka’s veteran Keshani Hansika returned to the national team and to the events in time to compete in the Commonwealth Games. The 35-year-old boxer had a bad opening round against Fiji’s Jasmine Daunakamakama and despite her efforts in the later parts of their 57kg quarter-final, the Sri Lankan missed the medal.

Northern Ireland’s Michaela Walsh is a Commonwealth Games specialist, she claimed silver medals in 2014 and in 2018 before she bagged the title four years ago. Walsh joined the semi-finals of the women’s 57kg weight class in Glasgow as well after beating Scotland’s newcomer Lara Brown.

India’s Arundhati Choudhary had a much harder job against New Zealand’s Morgan Henderson than she expected but finally she managed to win their quarter-finals. The next top boxer at the women’s 70kg, the Commonwealth Games winner Rosie Eccles of Wales stopped South Africa’s Samukelisiwe Sinothile Ncube.

Wales’ best male boxer, the bronze medallist from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Owain Harris-Allan performed perfectly against Scotland’s Nicholas Devlin and he managed his path to the semi-finals at the 60kg. His opponent in the last four will be India’s Sachin Siwach who won his third tough contests in Glasgow today.

Another Welsh boxer, Orlando Holley-Sotomi moved down to the 70kg weight class this year and he made the next strong performance in the session. The 23-year-old boxer dominated the first exchanges against Lesotho’s Refiloe Thai and he knocked out his opponent after one minute of fight.

Mauritius has strong traditions in the boxing events of the Commonwealth Games and their 33-year-old veteran, Merven Clair, the former All Africa Games winner, bagged a medal in Glasgow following his success over Ghana’s Precious Akai Nettey.

India’s Narender Berwal had a tight success over Samoa’s Michael Seko in the first quarter-final of the super heavyweight. Trinidad & Tobago’s World bronze medallist and Olympian Nigel Paul also secured a medal in Glasgow after his success over Togo’s Ramzi Salifou.
