
U23 hopes as Iliev, Petriman and Roganovic shined at the Belgrade Winner Tournament on Day1
The 63rd edition of the Belgrade Winner Tournament started with 52 contests in the first day of boxing in Obrenovac where U23 boxers such as Viktorio Iliev, Milan Petriman and Milos Roganovic all won their contests.
The Belgrade Winner Tournament is a perfect preparation option for the main goals of the year such as the European Elite Boxing Championships which will take place in Sofia this September, the Commonwealth Games, the Panamerican Boxing Championships and the Asian Games.
Bulgaria’s Zlatislava Chukanova had a hard job in her opener against Ukraine’s tall Taisiia Pokusai but she managed to beat the 19-year-old opponent at the busy women’s 51kg weight category in Belgrade.
South Korea’s Im Ae Ji, the Paris Olympics bronze medallist, felt the tempo well enough in her quarter-final bout against Ukraine’s Maria Mandziuk and she is now a guaranteed medallist at the women’s 54kg.
Armenia’s new 55kg boxer, Vagharshak Keyan was a unique surprise in the first day of boxing in Belgrade where he triumphed over Kazakhstan’s Youth World Champion Beksultan Boranbek using his powerful combinations.
Bulgaria’s European U23 silver medallist, the 20-year-old Viktorio Iliev had an emerging success against Armenia’s Argishti Hakobyan at the 65kg which category saw several nice bouts on Day1.
The Turkish boxers impressed in the first competition day, their Salih Samet Oruc (50kg), Semih Gumus (55kg), Refik Kartal (70kg) and Mert Aybuga (80kg) all eliminated excellent athletes in Belgrade.
Hungary’s Milan Petriman, the World Championships competitor, had a hard first round against Kazakhstan’s Assylkhan Kosherbay when the referee counted him. He came back to the contest in the end of the first round and after a technician performance, he eliminated the Kazakh boxer at the 65kg.
North Macedonia’s Naum Stojanoski had a good start in the men’s 70kg weight class against Saudi Arabia’s Issa Majed Alhay and he earned his nation’s lone success in Belgrade but Montenegro’s Milos Roganovic also had a comfortable start.
Wales’ Connor Williams has been preparing to the Commonwealth Games and on that road the Belgrade Winner Tournament supports him to check his skills. The tall Welsh boy was too smart for Turkey’s Muhammed Tunc Yagiz in a key contest at the men’s 90kg weight class.
The Armenians prepared well for this competition and their young talent, Erik Arstamyan was too strong for Ukraine’s Oleh Chulyacheyev at the men’s 60kg weight category. Montenegro’s European bronze medallist Tomislav Djinovic and Kazakhstan’s Nurassyl Tulebek closed the day with impressive victories.
