Tsukimi Namiki and Chen Nien Chin won the battle of the Olympic medallists at the Asian Games

Japan’s Tsukimi Namiki and Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin won the battles of the Olympic medallists in the seventh competition day at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan where both athletes earned medals.

Altogether 34 nations have entered to the boxing event of the Asian Games and eleven champions will be crowned in Japan. The number of the female boxers is 76 in five divisions, while 119 male athletes will fight in six categories.

The women boxers are able to compete at the 51kg, 54kg, 60kg, 65kg and 75kg weight categories, while the men’s divisions are the 55kg, 60kg, 70kg, 80kg, 90kg and +90kg.

Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, DPR Korea, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen are the registered teams to the Asian Games.

The women’s 54kg weight class is one of the strongest categories in the Asian Games and its quarter-finals delivered sensational bouts in Aichi-Nagoya. Two of the Tokyo Olympic medallists as Japan’s Tsukimi Namiki and Chinese Taipei’s Huang Hsiao Wen met in the last eight and surprisingly the first won their exciting meeting.

Thailand’s Asian Champion Natnicha Chongprongklang also had a tough battle but she could eliminated Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova. China’s Zhao Xuan and DPR Korea’s World Champion Pang Chol Mi are the further medallists at the women’s 54kg weight class.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin and Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng both were bronze medallists in the Paris Olympics but they had to meet each other already in the quarter-final stage of the women’s 65kg which was won by the quicker Chin today.

India’s former Asian Champion Parveen Hooda had a surprise success over Uzbekistan’s star Navbakhor Khamidova at the 65kg weight class. China’s Li Shu had a tight victory over Kazakhstan’s World Champion Aida Abikeyeva while DPR Korea’s Hwang Hyo Sun also succeeded in the quarter-finals.

Uzbekistan’s Olympic Games winner Abdumalik Khalokov dominated his second appearance in the event and he bowed out Philippines’ Junmilardo Ogayre. Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto, South Korea’s Jang Dong Hwan and Tajikistan’s Asian Champion Akmal Ubaidov also secured medals in this 60kg weight class.

Uzbekistan’s reigning World Champion Fazliddin Erkinboyev spent a short time in the ring against Sri Lanka’s promising Yazmin Mohommed Usaith and the ringside doctor stopped their unequal contest in the quarter-finals of the 80kg.

India’s Commonwealth Games winner Ankush Panghal, South Korea’s new surprise Kim Min Seong and Jordan’s veteran three-time Olympian Hussein Iashaish also joined the last four in the men’s 80kg weight class and followed Erkinboyev’s path.
