The returning boxers are finalists at the Mediterranean Games

The first finalists are revealed in the boxing tournament of the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy today where several of the retuning boxers shined with their performance.

Altogether 118 boxers from 18 nations are attending in the Games which holds only every four years as the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games.

Albania, Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Morocco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey are the 18 participating nations in Taranto.

Algeria’s Fatiha Mansouri is one of the experienced female boxers in their national team who turned up the heat in the second round when she faced Italy’s Martina Vassallo. The Algerian dominated the decisive third round and she became the first in the Mediterranean Games who joined the finals of the event.

Spain’s World Championships bronze medallist and the Paris Olympian Laura Fuertes started well against Morocco’s Yasmine Mouttaki and she took the lead on the judges’ scorecards after three minutes. The Spaniard was also better in the exchanges in the second and third rounds to secure her final spot at the women’s 51kg.

Italy’s Irma Testa returned to the events only a few months ago and the Olympic medallist prepared well tactically against Montenegro’s European Champion Bojana Gojkovic. The Italian had the height advantage in this contest and she was stronger in the second and third rounds to join the final of the 57kg.

France’s Amina Zidani had an unsuccessful Paris Olympics and as Testa, she returned to the international competitions this year. The 33-year-old French was dominant against Turkey’s Ece Asude Ediz in the semi-finals and she will now face Irma Testa in one of the dream finals of the Games.

Croatia’s Sara Beram moved up to the 65kg and she used up all of her routine from the recent 10 years to beat Algeria’s Djouher Benane after the tactical first round. Beram eliminated the Golden Belt Tournament winner North African and she became the first Croatian finalist in the boxing event of the Games.

Turkey’s Sema Caliskan is one of the most experienced female boxers at the 65kg with 14 years of routine and she had the tactical control over Morocco’s Mounia Toutire to secure her nation’s first spot in the day of the finals.

Egypt’s 28-year-old Nabila Aboelfead made a seriously huge surprise when she eliminated France’s Olympian Davina Michel in the quarter-finals of the 75kg. The Egyptian had another close fight in Taranto and she defeated Tunisia’s Molka Ben Mabrouk also by 3:2 split decision as Davina Michel therefore she will be boxing for the title with Italy’s Melissa Gemini.

Spain’s ex-Cuban Ewart Andres Marin was hungry for competing in a big event once again and he won his third-in-a-row bout in Taranto today. The 22-year-old boxer controlled his semi-final against North Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski and he will now meet for the gold medal of the 60kg Turkey’s Mehmethan Cinar.

Italy’s European U23 silver medallist, the 21-year-old Gabriele Guidi Rontani had an excellent rhythm against Morocco’s Abdelhaq Nadir and Spain’s Frank Martinez will be his last rival in the final of the men’s 70kg.
