The first medallists are revealed at the Commonwealth Games today

The boxing tournament of the Commonwealth Games continued in Glasgow, Scotland where the first medallists are revealed in the opening day of the quarter-finals.

England’s Lauren Mackie had a hard road to the quarter-finals of the women’s 54kg weight class but she managed to win her last key contest against Australia’s Olympian Monique Suraci. The 21-year-old English talent started well against Wales’ Helen Jones and she was able to keep the same rhythm until the last bell, earning the first guaranteed medal in Glasgow.

Canada’s Panamerican Champion Scarlett Delgado is another top class athlete at the women’s 54kg weight category and she controlled all of the three rounds against New Zealand’s 20-year-old youngster Greer Hall to reach the semi-finals.

Pakistan introduced women’s boxing in the 2010s and they launched their National Championships to develop the female part of the sport only a few years ago. Their Fatima Zahra made a historic step for Pakistan as she became the country’s first woman medallist in a Commonwealth Games after beating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson.

Canada’s 22-year-old Marie Al Ahmadieh had a hard opponent in the quarter-finals of the women’s 60kg, Kenya’s Rosemarion Otieno who lives and trains in Germany. The Canadian performed well today and due to her great final round, she was able to take the second boxing medal for her nation.

Northern Ireland’s Kaci Rock was too experienced for Niue’s NZ-based Karen Te Ruki Pasene in the first quarter-final of the women’s 65kg. The Egyptian referee counted the boxer from Niue three-times in their meeting but Pasene was able to fight until the last seconds and she lost only by points decision today.

Scotland’s Caitlin Rainey felt the support of the home crowd in her quarter-final bout against Papua New Guinea’s Flora Loga and she had the advantages on the scorecards after one round. The Scottish pugilist felt that she can finish the bout in the second round and her strength guaranteed a referee stoppage in that period.

Ghana’s powerful Mohammed Amadu caused a surprise in the session when he eliminated England’s Ellis Trowbridge in a hectic contest therefore the All Africa Games winner will be able to meet Australia’s Jye Dixon in the semi-finals of the men’s 55kg.

Lesotho’s Pooana Khoahli was relatively unknown before the start of the Commonwealth Games but he became a medallist in Glasgow following his next success over Mauritius’ Ziggy Agathe. Australia’s Jacob Cassar became the second guaranteed medallist at the men’s 65kg following his tight victory over Gabriel Labrie of Canada.

Wales’ Connor Williams had a hard job against Niue’s Duken Holo Tutakitoa-Williams but he took the first medal at the 90kg. Northern Ireland’s Garyn McAllister reached also the semi-final in this weight class after beating Ghana’s Jibril Muntari unanimously.
