The Central American & Caribbean Games started with four knockouts in Santo Domingo

The Commonwealth Games has just finished in Glasgow and a new multisport event, the Central American & Caribbean Games, which hosts also every four years only, has opened with its first two sessions in the capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo.

Bahamas, Barbados, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, US Virgin Islands and Venezuela sent their boxing teams to Santo Domingo.

Altogether 55 women and 76 men boxers are participating in the Central American & Caribbean Games where Mexico, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Puerto Rico have the biggest delegations.

Mexico’s Guadelupe Sherlyn Torres is an experienced national team member who had a clear dominance in the first round against Honduras’ newcomer Dariana Yesille Nunez and she finished the job with a stoppage in the second.

Another strong Mexican female boxer, Lorien Elizabeth Alonso had a veteran opponent from Barbados, Kimberly Gittens who opened her career at the 2010 Women’s World Boxing Championships. Alonso controlled all of the three rounds and the exchanges and she won their 75kg meeting unanimously in Santo Domingo.

Colombia’s Leidy Johana Rivas replaced the Olympic medallist Ingrit Valencia in the squad but she succeeded over Guatemala’s Dulce Diaz at the women’s 51kg. Her teammate at the 75kg, Angie Solano also made a strong debut against Trinidad & Tobago’s Eyed George in the first day of boxing.

Dominican Republic’s most experienced female boxer, the 29-year-old Estefani Almanzar delivered the first sensational result for the host country. Knockouts are very rear in women’s boxing but she landed lethal punches to smash Haiti’s Katiana Petit-Homme at the 54kg.

Cuba’s Dayira Mesa also knocked out her opponent from Nicaragua, Fredly Ramirez at the women’s 70kg while Dominican Republic’s strong male boxer celebrated a KO victory over Virgin Islands’ Aaron Hodge Jr. at the men’s 80kg.

Mexico’s Citlalli Ortiz earned a youth world title and she became Olympian in Paris but she was not able to use the best tactics against Puerto Rico’s Stephanie Pineiro and she suffered a loss in the first round of the women’s 70kg weight class.

Guatemala’s Brandol Perez is only 19-year-old but he proved his progress against Puerto Rico’s Dylan Jael Feliciano and he had a surprise success in the first day. Virgin Islands’ Eric Thompson had a KO success, while Dominican Republic’s Disney Medina and Cuba’s star Saidel Horta also joined the quarter-finals at the men’s 60kg.
