The 44 medallists are revealed at the Asian Games
The last stage of the quarter-finals took place in the eighth competition day at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan where the 44 medallists are revealed.
Altogether 34 nations have entered to the boxing event of the Asian Games and eleven champions will be crowned in Japan. The number of the female boxers is 76 in five divisions, while 119 male athletes will fight in six categories.
The women boxers are able to compete at the 51kg, 54kg, 60kg, 65kg and 75kg weight categories, while the men’s divisions are the 55kg, 60kg, 70kg, 80kg, 90kg and +90kg.
Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, DPR Korea, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen are the registered teams to the Asian Games.
China’s Olympic Games winner and defending Asian Games gold medallist Wu Yu faced Mongolia’s returning Olympian Yesugen Oyuntsetseg in the quarter-finals of the women’s 51kg weight class and she succeeded in their important meeting.
Uzbekistan’s Feruza Kazakova exceeded her level and she eliminated DPR Korea’s strong An Kum Byol in the next quarter-final bout. Vietnam’s two-time Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam and Kazakhstan’s World Champion Alua Balkybekova also won guaranteed medals in the women’s 51kg weight category.
China’s Youth World Champion Bao Ziyi is only 20-year-old but she has the height, the strength and the routine to beat such experienced boxers as Thailand’s Porntip Buapa in the quarter-finals of the women’s 75kg.
India’s World Champion and Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain controlled all of the three rounds against South Korea’s Seong Su Yeon and she joined the semi-finals. Vietnam’s Luu Diem Quynh and Kazakhstan’s World Champion Natalya Bogdanova are the further medallists at the women’s 75kg.
Kazakhstan’s World Champion, the 20-year-old Torekhan Sabyrkhan had an easy success in the Round of 16 and he invested more efforts to his next bout against Iraq’s Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarray. The Kazakh superstar landed a lethal punch still in the first round and he knocked out Iraq’s best hope in the quarter-final stage of the Games.
Further favourites of the men’s 70kg division such as Uzbekistan’s Shavkatjon Boltayev, Japan’s 2021 World Champion Sewon Okazawa and Jordan’s Zeyad Eshaish won their quarter-final bouts by points decisions.
The women’s 60kg weight class has plenty of stars in the line-ups, the Olympic Champion Lin Yu Ting of Chinese Taipei eliminated her next top rival, DPR Korea’s Won Un Gyong in the quarter-finals. Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova, China’s Yang Chengyu and India’s Commonwealth Games winner Priya Ghanghas are the further semi-finalists in this weight.
Following his younger brother’s KO victory, Makhmud Sabyrkhan also joined the last four in the Games, the World Champion was too strong for South Korea’s Shin Jae Yong. Philippines’ Olympic silver medallist Carlo Paalam, Mongolia’s Bilguunsaikhan Kharkhuu and Japan’s Rui Yamaguchi are still in the semi-finals at the men’s 55kg.
Uzbekistan’s Turabek Khabibullayev won the battle of the Elite World Champions against Kazakhstan’s Nurbek Oralbay at the 90kg quarter-final bout. Tajikistan’s Parviz Karimov, China’s Han Xuezhen and India’s Kapil Pokhariya are also medallists in the Games.
