Spain topped the medal standings at the Mediterranean Games

Spain topped the medal standings with four gold medals at the boxing tournament of the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy today.

Altogether 118 boxers from 18 nations participated in the Games which holds only every four years as the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games.

Albania, Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Morocco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey were the 18 participating nations in Taranto.

Spain’s World Championships bronze medallist Laura Fuertes had the impressive start against Algeria’s Fatiha Mansouri in the first round and she had the solid advantage on the judges’ scorecards. The 27-year-old Spanish found the best angles in the later actions as well and she earned the well-deserved title of the women’s 51kg.

One of the most anticipated female finals were held between two returning boxers, Italy’s World Champion and two-times European Champion Irma Testa and France’s European Games winner Amina Zidani in Taranto. The Italian won the first round but the veteran French came back with better performance in the second therefore Testa needed a great finish to earn the title of the women’s 57kg.

Croatia’s Sara Beram progressed in all aspects of boxing since she moved up to the 65kg and the 31-year-old boxer had the strong game play to beat Turkey’s Sema Caliskan in the final of the Mediterranean Games, achieving a career highlight.

Italy’s Melissa Gemini is a 24-year-old boxer in their women’s national team and she is the best for them in the 75kg in comparison in the last 10 years. The Italian had a strong finish in the decisive third round against Egypt’s Nabila Aboelfead who became a new sensation in this international event.

Spain’s ex-Cuban Ewart Andres Marin had three consecutive victories during his road to the final of the men’s 60kg but Turkey’s Mehmethan Cinar stopped him. The next Spaniard was also near to earn a title in Taranto but he got a warning in the second round therefore the gold medal remained in Italy, Gabriele Guidi Rontani achieved that.

Serbia’s Marko Pizurica was in top shape in the entire competition and he had a surprise success also in the semi-finals but Spain’s Olympics bronze medallist Emmanuel Reyes was still too experienced for him in the 90kg final bout.

Italy’s Sirine Charaabi had a very difficult semi-final at the women’s 54kg and she was expected another hard battle against Morocco’s World Champion Widad Bertal. The 27-year-old Italian won all of the three rounds closely and she earned the host nation’s next gold medal in Taranto.

Kosovo’s Donjeta Sadiku is a well-experienced Olympian pugilist and she earned several historic medals for her homeland in the recent years. The Kosovan worked hard from all of the ranges to beat Serbia’s ex-Russian Kristina Kuluhova at the women’s 60kg final.

Spain’s World silver medallist Rafael Lozano Serrano is one of their aces but he had to do his very best to beat France’s Christopher Hippocrate at the 55kg. His teammate, Pablo Coy recovered from his injury and he took the next gold medal for Spain after beating Algeria’s Moustapha Abdou at the 80kg.

Morocco’s Soulaimane Samghouli had a tight success over Algeria’s Ismail Bekhsis at the men’s 65kg weight class while France’s Olympic bronze medallist Djamili-Dini Aboudou Moindze had a great finish to beat Turkey’s Berat Acar at the super heavyweight.
