Qatar won the opening bout of the Asian Games

Qatar won the first opening bout at the boxing tournament of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan where the preliminaries of the men’s 70kg were on the schedule.

Altogether 34 nations have entered to the boxing event of the Asian Games and eleven champions will be crowned in Japan. The number of the female boxers is 76 in five divisions, while 119 male athletes will fight in six categories.

The women boxers are able to compete at the 51kg, 54kg, 60kg, 65kg and 75kg weight categories, while the men’s divisions are the 55kg, 60kg, 70kg, 80kg, 90kg and +90kg.

Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, DPR Korea, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen are the registered teams to the Asian Games.

A 70kg athlete, Mohammed Dbichi is a new member in Team Qatar and the 21-year-old worked hard from the first seconds to beat Vietnam’s Nguyen Duc Ngoc in the opening bout of the entire Asian Games.

India’s Sumit Kundu and Thailand’s Asian Champion Bunjong Sinsiri had to meet each other already in the Round of 32 at the men’s 70kg. The Indian gained the control of their meeting in the first round and he looked more fresh than the 34-year-old Thai veteran today.

Iraq’s No.1, Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarray achieved medals already in the level of Asian Championships and he had a technician performance to beat Nepal’s Dan Bahadur Darlami in the next preliminary bout of the 70kg.

South Korea’s 24-year-old Kim Joon Su participated in several events in this Olympic cycle and he had the strong start against a promising boxer, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Ibrahim Frootan to join the last 16 of the men’s 70kg.

Li Guofeng represented China at the 2023 World Boxing Championships and the 2024 Asian Boxing Championships but he is not an experienced international boxer yet. He delivered one of the surprises of the day when he eliminated Iran’s Ali Habibinezhad, a multiple international tournament winner at the 70kg.

Philippines’ Norlan Petecio, Nesthy’s younger brother, dominated his fight against Cambodia’s Sophors Vy, before Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Pradana Mudiyanselage eliminated Yemen’s Mustafa Saeed in this strong 70kg division.

Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov was a bronze medallist in the last edition of the Asian Games but Turkmenistan’s No.1 suffered an unexpected loss to Bahrain’s Aly Abdalla, while Palestine’s Mohammed Issa also defeated a previous medallist, Kan Chia Wei of Chinese Taipei.
