Mounia Toutire celebrated her 23rd birthday with a medal at the Mediterranean Games

Morocco’s Mounia Toutire celebrated her 23rd birthday with a medal in the boxing tournament of the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy.

Altogether 118 boxers from 18 nations are attending in the Games which holds only every four years as the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games.

Albania, Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Morocco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey are the 18 participating nations in Taranto.

Croatia’s Sara Beram did not find the best fighting range against Tunisia’s Molka Khalifi in the opening of the fourth competition day but she switched her tempo in time after the break. The Croatian performed well in the second round and she had a fantastic final period to beat the Tunisian at the 65kg quarter-final.

Serbia’s World bronze medallist Anastasija Lukajic and Algeria’s Djouher Benane both were counted by the referee in the first round but the latter took the lead on the scorecards. Benane was excellent in the preparation events and she had the strong third round to beat the Serbian at the 65kg.

Egypt’s Paris Olympian Yomna Ayyad moved up to the 65kg this year but and she started her quarter-final bout with strong attacks against Morocco’s Mounia Toutire. The Moroccan was more confident from the second round to beat the Egyptian and she will celebrate her 23rd birthday tomorrow with a medal in the Games.

Turkey’s Sema Caliskan and Spain’s Mariana Soto had close first and second rounds but the Spanish ringside abandoned the fight in the third. The next Spanish, Rafael Lozano, the World silver medallist, dominated his quarter-final bout against Italy’s Tommaso Sciacca at the men’s 55kg.

Turkey’s European Champion and Olympian Samet Gumus had difficulties against Serbia’s Artur Nagapetjan in their 55kg meeting and his opponent had some advantages after two rounds. The Serbian felt the distance and he made a remarkable third round to beat his Turkish opponent in the quarter-finals.

France’s Christopher Hippocrate was slightly better than Egypt’s Amir Mohamed Farag Ahmed Kelany in the last quarter-final of the 55kg. Albania’s European Youth silver medallist Ariol Zeneli suffered a loss to North Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski which was another small surprise in the session.

The former Youth World silver medallist Ewart Andres Marin received the Spanish passport this year and the ex-Cuban controlled all of the three rounds against Greece’s Georgios Pleas at the 60kg quarter-final.

Morocco’s Othman Chadghour is one of the most talented boxers in their national team but he was not enough experienced yet to beat Turkey’s Mehmethan Cinar. Italy’s Michele Baldassi had a tough preliminary battle in Taranto but he worked better against France’s Mohamed Dahmane Djemmal today.
