Kloetzer, Lopez, Trowbridge, Campbell and Sufijonov all exceeded the expectations in Foz da Iguacu
The first medallists are revealed at the World Boxing Cup in Foz da Iguacu, Brazil on Day4 when New Zealand’s Connor Campbell, Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov, Spain’s Marta Lopez del Arbol, England’s Ellis Trowbridge and Germany’s Maxi Kloetzer all exceeded the expectations.
The host of the first stage of the World Boxing Cup is the picturesque Foz da Iguacu where such top nations as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Brazil, United States, France, China, England, Japan, Italy, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Poland, Romania, Morocco, Hungary, Venezuela, Tajikistan, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada, Spain, Ireland and many others are on the board.
France’s European U22 Champion Romane Moulai is in top shape this year and the 51kg boxer had the footwork to beat Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan in a tactical battle while the favourite of the category, Busenaz Cakiroglu was not able to box on Day4.
Germany’s Maxi Kloetzer delivered a sensational performance in the session, she outpointed Uzbekistan’s Feruza Kazakova in the women’s 51kg and her teammate, Ali El Sari also succeeded against Armenia’s Zhirayr Sargsyan.
Ireland’s Daina Moorehouse had the string strategy to beat Poland’s Natalia Kuczewska in a tight 51kg contest while China’s QI Xinyu also had to do her very best to eliminated Italy’s young Martina Vassallo by split decision.
Spain’s Marta Lopez del Arbol, Argentina’s Tatiana Flores, Uzbekistan’s Farzona Fozilova and Mexico’s Fatima Herrera are in the last four at the 48kg, while England’s Lauren Mackie, Serbia’s Sara Cirkovic, China’s Gan Yunman and Morocco’s Widad Bertal joined the semi-finals at the 54kg.
Spain’s Rafael Lozano Serrano, the World silver medallist and the Paris Olympian, also opened his campaign in the World Cup and he had a close victory over Azerbaijan’s young talent, Zidan Hunbatov on Day4.
Japan’s Rui Yamaguchi impressed in his recent international competitions including at the Asian Boxing Championships and he travelled to Foz da Iguacu with high hopes. The Japanese boxer continued his winning path and he eliminated another star at the 55kg, Turkey’s European Champion Samet Gumus.
England’s Ellis Trowbridge started the year with a silver medal at the Boxam Tournament in Spain and he delivered a sensational performance against one of the rising stars, the US teenager Lorenzo Patricio to join the last eight at the men’s 55kg.
Australia’s Jye Dixon and Tajikistan’s Asian medallist Meroj Sufijonov both are members of the next generations at the 55kg and the youngsters eliminated such strong boxers as Romania’s Daniel Florin Girleanu and Ireland’s World medallist Thady Patsy Joyce.
New Zealand’s Connor Campbell is not an experienced boxer in the international stage yet but he exceeded all of the expectations when he defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Asian U22 Champion Omar Livaza at the 65kg.
Brazil’s Yuri Falcao Reis is one of the stars of the host country’s squad who used his brilliant technical skills to beat Poland’s Bartlomiej Roskowicz at the 65kg. Canada’s Gabriel Labrie, France’s Hugo Grau and Spain’s Oier Ibarreche all were excellent in this weight class.
