Kazemi, Sufijonov and Nguyen were among the winners at the Asian Games on Day2

Iran’s Mehdi Kazemi, Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov and Vietnam’s returning Nguyen Thi Tam made strong efforts in the second day at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Altogether 34 nations have entered to the boxing event of the Asian Games and eleven champions will be crowned in Japan. The number of the female boxers is 76 in five divisions, while 119 male athletes will fight in six categories.

The women boxers are able to compete at the 51kg, 54kg, 60kg, 65kg and 75kg weight categories, while the men’s divisions are the 55kg, 60kg, 70kg, 80kg, 90kg and +90kg.

Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, DPR Korea, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen are the registered teams to the Asian Games.

Sri Lanka’s veteran Nadeeka Pushpakumari competed at the Commonwealth Games a few weeks ago and she was added also to the Asian Games squad. She controlled two out of the three rounds against Afghanistan’s lone female boxer, Lala Kargar and she joined the last 16 at the women’s 51kg.

Vietnam’s Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam recovered from her injuries and she was unstoppable for Nepal’s Ramisha Shrestha at the 51kg. Following her success in the Round of 32, her Paris Olympian teammate, Vo Thi Kim Anh also managed her pathway to the next stage at the 54kg, she eliminated Sri Lanka’s veteran Keshani Hansika at the 54kg.

India’s Commonwealth Games winner Sakshi Choudhary had tough months this year but she was able to fix her No.1 position in the national team. The 26-year-old Indian enjoyed her opener against a top rival, Philippines’ Olympic Games bronze medallist Aira Villegas and she eliminated another favourite already in the Round of 32.

DPR Korea’s two-time World Champion and Olympics bronze medallist Pang Chol Mi used her excellent technique to get the immediate control against Indonesia’s Nabila Maharani in their 54kg meeting. The DPR Korean star finished the bout in the second round when she caught the Southeast Asian athlete with heavy combinations.

Iran’s Mehdi Kazemi made a surprise in the second competition day when he eliminated a more experienced boxer, DPR Korea’s So Chon Ryong at the 55kg. Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov had strong junior and youth results and he opened his campaign with a dominance against Pakistan’s Sumana Rehman.

India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam was the favourite against his neighbour, Chandra Bahadur Thapa but he had to do his very best to beat Nepal’s No.1 at the 55kg. Bangladesh’s Mohamed Utshob Ahmed, Thailand’s 19-year-old Kangpi Bokhunthod and Kyrgyzstan’s Zafarbek Kamilov all joined the last 16 in this weight.
