Ireland selected 13-strong team to Loznica

The management of Ireland Boxing selected 13 boxers to participate in the upcoming European U19 Boxing Championships which will be held in Loznica, Serbia on August 11-22.

Out of the thirteen boxers, six have already claimed medals in the U15, U17 or U19 European Boxing Championships in the past.

The county of Westmeath qualified four, the capital city, Dublin will represent the Irish U19 team with three boxers, Wexford has two athletes in the line-ups while there will be representatives also from Antrim, Donegal, Mayo, and Tipperary.

Their boxers competed in preparation events as the Four Nations Championships, the Portimao Box Cup, the Golden Girl Box Cup and the U19 National Championships as well.

Kayleigh Byrne earned a bronze medal in the 2025 edition of the European U19 Boxing Championships following her achievements in the junior level. The 18-year-old boxer will return to the competition and her goal is the gold medal of the women1s 51kg this time.

Kristian Jubani claimed a gold medal at the recent European U17 Boxing Championships in Kienbaum last December and he remained at the 50kg weight class this year.

Kalib Walshe is another ace in the squad from the 2009 age group, the European U17 silver medallist joined the U19 team this January. The 17-year-old boxer has more than four years of international experience to reach another top result in Loznica.

Antrim’s Lee Largey Snodden (55kg), Jason Donoghue (65kg), John Donoghue (70kg), Jason Whelan (75kg) and Sean Doohan (85kg) are all medal favourites at the European U19 Boxing Championships.

The European U19 Boxing Championships have strong prestige but it will serve also as preparation for the U19 World Boxing Championships and the Youth Olympic Games.
