Iljins and Gulbis are Latvia’s best hopes at the European U19 Boxing Championships

Latvia will send eight boxers to the upcoming European U19 Boxing Championships which will be held in Loznica, Serbia on August 11-22.

The Latvians proved strong progress last year when their athletes claimed several medals in the top events, especially at the U15, U17 and U19 age groups.

Their boxers competed in the famous Dracula Open Tournament in Romania and the team was highly successful at the Danas Pozniakas Tournament in Lithuania this March.

Estere Zulpa is the lone girl in the Latvian U19 team who won their annual National Championships this March and she will represent the Baltic country at the women’s 57kg weight class.

Bogdans Pronins won the U19 National Championships and he will compete at the men’s 60kg weight category as in the Danas Pozniakas Tournament.

The 17-year-old Romans Iljins impressed at the Danas Pozniakas U19 Tournament where he defeated such strong athletes as Ukraine’s Oleksandr Sychevskyi, Lithuania’s promising Arturas Majauckas and a European Junior Championships competitor Giedrius Bacianskas. 

Timurs Gulbis just joined the U19 national team this January but he claimed a bronze medal at the recent European U17 Boxing Championships in Kienbaum, Germany.

Vladislavs Ustinovs is only 17-year-old as Gulbis and he had a strong achievement, a quarter-final spot in the European U17 Boxing Championships last December.

Kirils Salkovskis was bronze medallist at the Danas Pozniakas Tournament, and additionally Nords Rudens (75kg) and Markuss Reke (90kg) are also included to the travelling team.

The European U19 Boxing Championships have strong prestige but it will serve also as preparation for the U19 World Boxing Championships and the Youth Olympic Games.
