Gorbenko, Coy, Grau and Sarsilli all opened in style at the Mediterranean Games

The boxing tournament of the Mediterranean Games is the next top international event and two sessions are concluded in the city of Taranto, Italy.

Altogether 118 boxers from 18 nations are attending in the Games which holds only every four years as the Olympics or the Commonwealth Games.

Albania, Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Morocco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey are the 18 participating nations in Taranto.

The Italians have prepared for the Games in their national training camp in Assisi and their Tommaso Sciacca had a crucial battle against Kosovo’s Bashkim Bajoku but he won that 55kg meeting only by 3:2 split decision on home soil.

Dmitrij Gorbenko switched to Serbia in the recent one year and the technician boxer controlled the first round of his opener against North Macedonia’s Ruzhdi Rustemovski. The strong Serbian felt that he can finish the bout earlier as the last gong and he stopped his neighbouring opponent with heavy combinations.

Italy’s next boxer in action was Davide Fiore at the 65kg but he suffered an unexpected loss to Algeria’s newcomer Ismail Bekhsis by 3:2 split decision. France’s Hugo Grau is an ace at the men’s 65kg and he started his campaign well against Egypt’s Abdelfatah Hesham Abdelfatah Abeed.

Greece’s Michail Tsamalidis demonstrated his power against Albania’s Amar Koci in the first and second rounds of their 80kg preliminary bout. The Albanian moved forward more in the third round and he gave in everything but he could not turn back the fight despite his great attacks.

Tunisia’s Youssef Rafrafi prepared hard in the recent months to show his progress in Taranto where he had a strong start against Slovenia’s Gasper Munda at the Round of 16 of the 80kg weight category.

Spain’s Pablo Coy recovered from his injuries and he has the motivation to earn a top result in this Mediterranean Games. He controlled the first round against Kosovo’s Taulant Jakupi and he finished the job in the second with a stoppage at the 80kg preliminary.

The Italians changed most of their previous national team members and their young line-ups made a strong impression in Taranto. Their next talented hope, Christian Sarsilli was smarter in the exchanges than Egypt’s Fares Adel Metwali El-Sharkawi in the next 80kg bout.
