Future stars as Jubani, Dowds, Brule, Cilla and Brown are all finalists in Portimao

Several of the future stars impressed in the U15, U17 and U19 semi-finals of the Portimao Box Cup in Portugal today.

Spain’s Ezequiel Jimenez Suarez eliminated a local boxer from Portimao, Joao Negrita and he joined the finals of the 42kg among the youngest hopes. Ireland’s Sean Quigley won the cutest bout of the opening session, he defeated Adan Marin Guzman at the 31kg.

England’s U15 talent, Lottie Wylde won the first female contest of the day, she triumphed over Spain’s Lola Acevedo unanimously and she joined the finals of the 48kg. A fantastic U17 girl from Portimao, Anastasia Kelya made a U-turn against Ireland’s Sam McDaid after the first round and she won their semi-final today.

England’s U15 schoolboy, Joseph Penfold trains in the Repton ABC and he proved his strong future potential against Ireland’s Jonathan McDonagh to reach the final of the 40kg. His final opponent will be the confident Reuban Stevenson from the St. Paul’s ABC which is another famous boxing gym in England.

Iker Flores stopped his Spanish compatriot, Oliver Corleone Tiravit in their U15 semi-final showing great performance today despite his low number of bouts. Spain’s U17 talent, Abel Moreno defeated his teammate, Aitor Gutierrez with a great finish at the 60kg which was also a selection meeting between them.

Portugal’s best talent in the U17 age group, Alexy Brule, the winner from last year, used his impressive rhythm to take the lead against England’s Sonny Baker after two minutes. Portugal’s No.1 needed a great finish in the last round to beat a dangerous opponent in the semi-finals of the 44kg.

Spain’s Joel Gutierrez landed a powerful combination against France’s Kenzo Belin in the first round and the referee counted his opponent. The Spaniard had difficulties in the second round therefore the final verdict was depended on their performance in the last minutes. The 16-year-old French looked fresh enough in the final stage to turn back their 48kg semi-final.

France’s Keyton Selman had a tight success over England’s TJ Knight and he secured his place in the final of the 50kg. The French U17 boxer will be meeting for the gold medal with England’s Joshua Cairns who had the control against Zach Collett today.

Ireland’s Jonathan Brothers turned back his 52kg semi-final against England’s Leighton Humphreys with superb second and third rounds therefore the U17 junior athlete will be facing for the gold medal with England’s Fred Winterburn.

Ireland’s Tommy Brown, who returned to Portimao after two years, was a hard target for Switzerland’s Yuri Birnstiel in all of the three rounds and he had fantastic counter-attacks. The super talented boy will meet for the title his compatriot Emmet Shields in an anticipating Irish battle at the 54kg.

France’s new U17 flag bearer, Matvey Hryhoriev was impressive in the quarter-finals yesterday and he was highly confident in his second appearance against Portugal’s Artur Trunov therefore he can meet for the title of the 75kg Ireland’s Dublin-based Tadgh Brennan.  

Ireland’s Kristian Jubani, the defending European U17 Champion, moved up to the U19 age group this January and he amazed in the second competition day. The 17-year-old boxer had brilliant footwork against Tommy Fitzpatrick and the Youth Olympic quota holder joined the final of the event.

Slovakia’s Benjamin Sarissky is aiming for a place in the upcoming European U19 Boxing Championships to compete in Loznica and he gave in everything to beat France’s Farid Thalhoui therefore he will meet for the gold of the 55kg, Liam Irons of England.  

Spain’s U19 national team member Adam Kasmaoui is a strong puncher and he shocked Portugal’s Rodrigo Rocha in the first round of their 60kg semi-final. The 18-year-old Spanish boxer will face for the title of the weight class with France’s Temirbek Guseynov tomorrow.

Spain’s promising U19 athlete, Samuel Cilla Gonzalez lives and trains in Almeria and he was exceptional in the ring today, controlling all of the three rounds against an English boy, Ollie Smith and he secured a place in the final of the 65kg.

Lucas McIvor competed in several events in the recent four years but he had to meet a top compatriot, the Belfast-based Conor Dowds today. The European U17 competitor Dowds reduced the fighting distance successfully several times and he will now meet France’s Tiziano Belin for the gold of the 70kg.

Switzerland’s Leonis Pacarizi had a great success in the first day of boxing and he landed the better shots than Spain’s Daniel Boss Litvinchuk and he can expect a hard U19 final at the 75kg against England’s George Graham who had a great success over Slovakia’s tall Damian Becka.
