Brule, Lynass, Belin and Silva earned important U17 gold medals in Portimao
The U15 and U17 finals delivered sensational contests in the Portimao Box Cup in Portugal where Alexy Brule defended his throne.
Portugal’s U17 hope, Anastasia Kelya impressed before the final stages of the Portimao Box Cup but the local girl had a too strong opponent today, France’s Houda Inour defeated her at the female 52kg title contest.
A promising U15 talent, Catalina Campos won the Spanish battle over Aitana Marquez at the female 42kg final and she claimed her first main international title. England’s Rosie Hughes won another awaited schoolgirl final and she was unstoppable for Spain’s Dolores Del Pilar Bello Camacho at the 70kg.
England’s U15 prodigy, Isaac Rahman had a tight advantage on the judges’ scorecards against Alan Doherty but he could still increase his rhythm to win their 37kg bout. England’s Joseph Penfold made a small surprise when he defeated Reuban Stevenson at the 40kg with excellent first and second rounds.
Several of the U15 finals were close in the third competition day and Bobby James Francis and Riley Fuller proved also remarkable performances at the 44kg. Francis was slightly better in the exchanges especially in the second and third rounds.
Ireland’s Sieanna O’Herron and England’s Mileigh Addicott both are experienced female athletes despite their age of 14. Addicott looked confident in the first and second rounds but O’Herron’s amazing finish guaranteed the gold medal for the Irish at the 51kg.
Portugal’s Alexy Brule, the last year’s champion, moved up to the U17 age group this January, and he opened his campaign with a clear success on Day2. The 15-year-old Portuguese talent had a disadvantage on the scorecards against England’s Levi Smart after two minutes but Brule turned up the heat and he defended his throne in Portimao.
England’s U17 athlete, Tayla Sung prepared well to her final against Ireland’s Danni Doherty and she followed the instructions of her coaches in the first round. The Irish girl returned to the final of the 57kg in the second round with better shots but Sung responded effectively in the third to take the title of the Portimao Box Cup.
Portugal’s next U17 hope, Adrian Silva had a comfortable advantage against Ireland’s Bobby O’Keefe on the judges’ scorecards after two rounds and he felt the distance well to take to the 66kg title in Portimao.
Ireland’s Martin Stokes performed strongly in the entire competition and he had the technical skills to beat Harry Norfolk at the 57kg. Norway’s first gold medal in the event was achieved by Milo Frafjord at the 70kg after beating Ireland’s Wayne Barrett.
Spain’s Carmen Fernandez knew very well her teammate, Malaga’s Irache Martinez and she won their U17 final at the 63kg with confidence. Abel Moreno secured the next Spanish success at the U17 60kg, knocking out William Sumner today.
England’s Fred Winterburn eliminated strong rivals during his road to the final of the 52kg and he opened the title bout effectively against Johnathan Brothers of Ireland. The 16-year-old English worked well also in the last round to take the gold medal of the Portimao Cup.
Ireland’s Tommy Brown was exceptional in the semi-final of the 54kg but his teammate, Emmet Shields was too smart for him today. England’s Neveah Lynass, France’s Kenzo Belin and England’s John Luke Stevens all impressed in the top U17 finals in Portimao.
