Bajoku, Rustemovski, Knezevic, Saporito and Kiss earned titles at the Grand Prix Zagreb
The Grand Prix in Zagreb has finished with its finals in Croatia where Kosovo’s Bashkim Bajoku, North Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski, Croatia’s Petar Kresimir Knezevic and Hungary’s Levente Kiss all won their weight categories.
The men’s elite boxers can test themselves in Zagreb short after the Belgrade Winner Tournament and seven athletes reached the top of the podium.
Croatia, North Macedonia, Italy, Kosovo and Hungary earned the gold medals in the Grand Prix but Germany, Slovenia and Bosnia & Herzegovina also secured podium places.
The Grand Prix Zagreb served as the preparation even for the annual European Elite Boxing Championships which will be held in Sofia on September 15-26.
Kosovo sent a small delegation to the Grand Prix Zagreb and their Bashkim Bajoku exceeded all of the expectations with his triumphs over Hungary’s experienced Istvan Szaka and Italy’s World Championships competitor Salvatore Attrattivo.
North Macedonia’s Alen Rustemovski delivered some strong achievements in the regional international competitions and he continued his winning path at the Grand Prix in Zagreb where he was too smart for Croatia’s Vide Prkacin at the 60kg.
Croatia’s Tomislav Siprak is a new face in the national team but he had the skills against Kosovo’s Zenel Hasani to decide a close final at the 65kg, claiming the host nation’s first title in Zagreb.
North Macedonia’s Naum Stojanovski has just competed at the Belgrade Winner Tournament but he travelled to Croatia immediately after the event and that extra experience paid off in the final of the 70kg against Italy’s Francesco Di Spazio.
Croatia’s Petar Kresimir Knezevic controlled his final against Germany’s Fatlind Dreshaj at the 75kg while Italy’s 18-year-old Raffaele Saporito stopped his local opponent in the final of the 85kg weight class.
Hungary’s European U23 Championships medallist Levente Kiss recovered from his injuries and he eliminated Kosovo’s promising Taulant Jakupi, another European podium finisher in the semi-finals. The Hungarian walked over to the title of the 90kg following his opponent from Germany, Erik Wunsch was unable to box against him in the final.
